Introducing a New Blog & Initiative: ACD Youth Media

Introducing a new ACD blog:  ACD Youth Media.  This blog will post the work of ACD youth who are in the midst of learning the power of documentation and storytelling.  All youths involved have been permitted by parents/guardians to have their photos and work published online.

The above poster is a photoshop piece of a photo I took of a brother and sister I met at a displacement camp in Canar, Haiti.  The text was created by my students on Friday using modeling clay.

On May 27th, the school is having the annual 3rd Grade Caribbean Fair. This event will take up most of the day, and this year the theme is travel. So, the small gym downstairs is going to be turned into what looks like an airport, students will hand in their passports at the door, and then “travel” to each island.

Our class is focusing on Haiti. With the recent earthquake, we are proposing to the school a fundraising project for the 1.5 million displaced Haitians.  Over the next few weeks, we will be learning the history of Haiti, and building a historical timeline.  This process will be documented for several purposes:  To document the process of using service-learning as a way to educate and empower the youth, to create a produced piece that will be the proposal for the school to fundraise for Haiti, and of course, last but not least, to show the youth involved what great stars they really are.
