Asian In America – The Launching of a new ACD Media Studios Project
We hope you are having a great summer so far and staying cool. 2012 has been intense in all ways, and we need everyone to be taking care of themselves, as warriors in the Struggle are more powerful and effective when they’re healthy.
Much is happening here at the ACD Media HQ. We have just recently opened a new photo studio here at the space, so ACD Media Studios is open for business! We will be working on a new section of the website with the details of the studio, so stay tuned. Next, ACD Media members Oja and Vanissa are getting ready for their month-long trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico to document an Earthship Biotecture build. For the month of August, ACD has been fundraising for this trip as the work will be on a volunteer basis. (Please check the last post for more details about this work.) We will be having our final ATLANTIS 2012 Farewell Party this Saturday night, August 25th, 2012, from 10PM-DAWN at the ACD Media Head Quarters. Please RSVP and get the directions on how to get there.
Now, onto the website. The ACD Media website is currently under construction, so apologies for any confusion, missing links. We’re working on all of that right now, and trying to organize the site so that it flows together well.
Lastly, Late last night we launched a new project called Asian In America. Check it:
Asian In America is an ongoing multimedia project focused on creating a collective narrative (via photographic portraits, written narratives, and aural history) of people of Asian descent living in America.
In these times of white-dominance in mainstream media, the narratives and histories of other peoples are too often marginalized and uncrystallized. Asian In America is a multimedia project aimed to combat this kind of media monopolization and to create space for Asians living in America to be seen and heard.
All too often, those in power rewrite others histories to maintain their dominance and exercise their entitlement. As a result, we suffer the repercussions of racist negative stereotyping as it follows us in school, in the workplace, and in the streets. Sometimes this kind of media violence can result in lost opportunities (i.e., not getting a job, or a house), or worse yet, in hate crimes (i.e., the cases of Vincent Chin & Private Danny Chen, etc.). Asian In America is a declaration of our authorship over our own narratives and our own histories.
Currently we are looking for Asian/Pacific Islander individuals to participate. Participation means: 1) Being photographed in a studio, 2) Submitting your narrative of your experience as an Asian in America, 3) Having your voice recorded while you read your narrative (in part, or whole). There is not a word count limit to the narrative – feel free to write your experience. If your narrative is long, an excerpt will be highlighted alongside your portrait, but the whole narrative will be available in the whole of the multimedia project.
Right now the methods of exhibition will be via the ACD Media website (we will be creating a specific section for it), email blasts, and Facebook (please check and “like” our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/AsianInAmericaACD. However, eventually, we would like to head towards the direction of a physical exhibition. It all depends on the participation, audience engagement, and avenues that will open up as this project develops organically.
If you are interested, please write to: firstname.lastname@example.org or simply write a message on the page.
Thank you and have a blest day.
